China says US hyped sailing of Navy warship in Taiwan Strait | Govt-and-politics

The Navy’s Japan-dependent 7th Fleet explained late Tuesday that the passing of the USS Sampson via the 160-kilometer- (100-mile-) wide waterway involving Taiwan and China “demonstrates the United States’ dedication to a free of charge and open Indo-Pacific.”

Senior Colonel Shi Yi, a Chinese armed forces spokesperson, claimed the U.S. had “publicly hyped” the move.

“The recurrent provocations of the U.S. have sent the completely wrong signals to ‘Taiwan independence’ forces and deliberately undermined peace and security in the Taiwan Strait,” Shi said in a statement. “We firmly oppose it.”

China claims Taiwan as aspect of its territory and says the self-governing island need to arrive under its rule.
