Juneteenth officially a Colorado state holiday

Gov. Jared Polis and the state workers union last year agreed to make Juneteenth a new, official state holiday — and SB22-139 is an enactment of that agreement. The monthly bill was championed by 3 associates of Colorado’s Black legislative caucus.

“Making Juneteenth a condition vacation implies Colorado would not only acknowledge that Black persons are free of charge, but that all folks are free of charge,” said state Sen. James Coleman, a Denver Democrat and a lead sponsor of the Juneteenth monthly bill. “It is a recognition that we not only drive for some Coloradans to prosper, but for all to prosper, and for all Coloradans, no matter of race or background, to earn a living wage, have an cost-effective position to call dwelling, and get the equitable entry to well being care and education and learning people today have to have to shift forward and prosper.”

His Senate cosponsor, Aurora Democrat Janet Buckner, said it’s “long past time” Colorado designed this transform.
